What is the size of your market and where are your prospects located? <back>To gather this information, you can use almost the same resources used to answer the question of where your competitors are and where are they located. Unfortunately, you will not get information on the dollar value of your market using these resources. To obtain dollar value, you may need to read analyst reports, industry news publications, and perform more online research. However, both B2B (Business to Business) and B2C (Business to Consumer) businesses can use the resources below to gain insight on the size of their market and where their prospects are located. If you are B2B, find out the Standard Industry Classification (SIC) code for your target market. To identify who your prospects are and where are they located, look up their SIC code using Reference USA, an Internet based service provided by many libraries. You can lookup both residential and business data with this service. The Lifestyle Market Analysts often at business libraries, is great for B2C information. It contains zip code demographics and census information. You can look for the locations where there is a high interest in skiing, boating, Macintosh usage, etc. Use this information to find out where there is likely to be interest in your product / service. Industry analyst reports often contain information on market size, share, and dollar value. In addition, industry trade show organizations often allow exhibitors purchase the mailing lists of their membership and tradeshow attendees for one time use. If you purchase the list, you can identify where your prospects are located and also do a mailing at the same time. Survey results and databases are also great sources for information. Check out the U.S. Census Bureau at http://www.census.gov/ for data and projections on people, businesses and the economy. If you visit a business library, take a look at the Dun’s Regional and Local Directories, which lists companies by sales, employees, by industry, by SIC code. Also at business libraries, the Thomas Register (www.thomasregister.com ) provides leading information for manufacturing information and B2B e-commerce. The American Directory of Business can also lead to great discoveries about your prospects. |
